Delta Lake and similar lakehouse formats add ACID transactions and time travel on object storage, so many readers and writers can share reliable tables. This is useful when analytics, pipelines, and AI features must see a consistent version of the data.
Whilst “one lakehouse” sounds like a single switch, in practice schema drift and concurrent merges still break jobs. For example, a feature table updates mid-training and nobody can reproduce last week’s run. We often recommend medallion tiers with enforced schemas, time-travel recovery, and quality checks before gold tables feed models or reports.
Object storage alone is cheap and fragile under concurrent writers. Delta Lake (and peers in the lakehouse pattern) add a transaction log so reads see consistent snapshots, writes commit atomically, and you can audit or roll back “as of” a version. That matters when analytics, features, and ML corpora must not silently diverge mid-job. ACID does not replace governance — it makes schema and quality rules enforceable at the storage layer. Medallion tiers (bronze/silver/gold) keep downstream workloads on curated tables, not raw dumps.
